Did you encounter one sided commitments?

The issues of one sided commitments:

When it comes to human relationships it is always bilateral. But we encounter many situations where people expect one sided commitments. When it is not met by the other person, they start blaming, complaining, abusing, cursing! Let me list four instances from different walks of life to explain this point better.

Customer and Service Provider – The customer/client thinks he is the king (I don’t know what he thinks about the vendor/service provider). He expects best of the world services/goods from the vendor. He expects the goods to be delivered at any time of the day, be it morning 5 or 9 in the evening. He expects the services to be provided any day of the week. He expects the service provider to answer the calls at any time of the day! Even if there is one day delay in providing the service/delivering goods, he raises his voice, as if it is a lifesaving drug!

Payments – But when it comes to making payment, he won’t pay the fees/charges for months! As a matter of curtesy also, he won’t make a mention about it. On top of it, if the service provider asks for the money, he gets upset. Am I right?

Citizens and Government – The citizens always complain about government service. The ‘demands’ made by the Officers. For example

  • Buy a property for Rs.40 Lakhs and get it registered for 20 lakhs. Then complain about the corruption at registrar’s office.
  • Get illicit income or account for fictitious expenses, pay less tax to the Government. Then complain about the corruption at Revenue department.
  • Violate the byes of the corporation and build houses or flats. Then blame the officials for harassing for money! Am I right?

Personal relationship – You will display a weak memory to remember the birthday of your friend. You will find excuses for not attending a function at a friend’s house. You will choose not to acknowledge the achievements of your relative’s kids. But when it comes to yours, if your friend or relative is not wishing, praising or visiting you, you will start blaming them! Am I right?

Vice Versa – it could be even other way round. A service provider after taking the money may not provide the service. The way he communicates before taking the money and after getting money will be poles apart. An employee may not return what he is supposed to do for his company. Or the government official will behave as if he is the only honest soul on earth (but takes money later)

So, I am not taking sides here. The idea of this article is to discuss about the harsh reality of life. Human beings will always find fault with others. But when it comes to themselves, their commitments will not be reciprocal. Those who don’t have commitment for their words, have no business in complaining about others. Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality. Am I right?

Commitment – Either you do or you don’t, there is no in-between
