As per Section 353 of Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act, 1976, No place within the limits of the city shall be used for any of the purposes mentioned in Schedule X without a license obtained from the Commissioner and except in accordance with the condition, specified therein. This means the trades and industries which are listed out in Schedule X of the above Act, coming under the BBMP jurisdiction have to obtain a license from BBMP Commissioner. The health department of BBMP is in charge of these matters. The health officer of BBMP has powers to close unlicensed commercial premises.
When to obtain?
Section 353(3) of the Act mentions that the owner or occupier of every place for the use of which for any purpose a license is required shall apply to the Commissioner for such license not less than 30 days before the place is used for such purpose.
Will the license expire?
Each such license shall expire at the end of a period of 5 years, for which it is granted or at such earlier date as the commissioner may, for specific reasons, specify in the license.

- No objection certificate from your immediate neighbor (format is made available by BBMP)
- A certified layout plan of your trade building showing the business, working or washing or resting areas
- Tax paid receipt
- Katha extract
- Katha certificate
- Sanction plan
- Occupancy certificate (OC)
Can we apply online?
Yes. There is a provision to apply for license online.
Important Points to be noted-
- Trade License is issued specifically for the Trade; it does not regularize unauthorized constructions or violations of building bye laws.
- Normally, the trade license process will take around 30 days
- The fee for license differs based on the nature of business
