Billionaires with big ideas are privatizing American science

Amidst 24/7 news coverage of blame game politics from Arvind to Modi, I read a small (I mean very small) news item with the above caption.

Look at some of the points mentioned in the article –

  • It was a brainstorming session among scientists, philanthropists, industry bigwigs, administrators etc. headed by President Obama.
  • During this session, they unveiled “the next great American project” a $100 million initiative to probe the mysteries of the human brain
  • Harold Hamm, a leading figure in the North Dakota oil rush and his wife, Sue Ann said “We want to eradicate diabetes in our lifetime”
  •  Today, federal funding of basic research is on the decline,” the group said. “The best hope for near-term change lies with American philanthropy
  •  If the rich donors are to be believed, their financing of scientific research in the years ahead will expand greatly in size and scope. A main reason is the Giving Pledge
  •  In 2010, Gates, along with his wife Melinda and the investor Warren E. Buffett announced the campaign. So far, roughly a fifth of America’s nearly 500 billionaires have signed up, pledging to donate the majority of their fortunes to charity
  •  A decade before, Paul G. Allen, a co-founder of Microsoft, had set up a brain science institute in Seattle, to which he donated $500 million, and Fred Kavli, a technology and real estate billionaire, had then established brain institutes at Yale, Columbia and the University of California
  • Obama said. “We have to seize them. I don’t want the next job-creating discoveries to happen in China or India or Germany. I want them to happen right here

And so on.

Look at how US administration (including Private bigwigs) is thinking and acting. Action speaks.

”Small mind discuss people, average mind discuss events and great mind discuss ideas ”

Now just see what Indian administration and politicians are doing –

  • What happened in 1984?
  • What you did in 2002?
  • Our grand schemes such as Free water, 1 rupee rice, 2 rupee kerosene, 3 rupee Power will bring us votes
  • Your grand scams such as Railgate, Coalgate, Cibaca, Santoor etc.,will help us to win this time (claim by opposition)
  • Why and how are you using helicopters?
  • Why are you staying in 4 bedroom bungalow?
  • Now the latest; about 1962 Indo-China War probe!
  • For tomorrow the discussion maybe about 1947 freedom and partition, 1942 – why British didn’t quit? Or maybe, an SIT or CBI probe about 1857 first war of independence – which Neta took money from British!

No one is discussing about the growth of this country, investment into Research activity. The smallest of the small private companies will project their revenue, expenses and future plan for the years to come. But for our country of this size and magnitude, no political party (read as administration including private bigwigs) is discussing about Research, development, futuristic plans etc., either privately in brainstorming session or through media discussions.

The entire discussion is about personal vendetta, blame game, Game of politics, Game of votes, false representation, appeasement, TRP earnings, fooling the people and what not.

At least during this election time, I expected some serious discussion among the politicians, academicians and industrialists about the Future development plan for this country.

If you look at India, what are we doing?

India as Real estate Provider: We offer space for foreign players to set up their shop here.

India as Supplier of Manpower: We offer people (like any other outsourcing agency) to foreign players to work for them

India as a consumer: We buy their mobile technology (whether people have toilet or not, they have mobile phones with paid ringtones), their food (even beggars in India wants burgers). We buy carrots and beetroots from their shops, eat potato chips made by them, etc.

Think for a minute; if the policy of US, UK changes and they stop outsourcing their work to India, what can happen? We don’t have our own technology, our own products.Even our Defence equipment’s are imported! Image the fate of cities like Bangalore! They may become ghosts’ places.

What a contrast!

USUncle Sam is progressing; India, Uncle Scam is thriving!
