The Final Crucial Step in Income Tax Return Filing: E-Verification

By now, most of you would have filed your income tax return (ITR) in India. Typically, the bulk of the work involves compiling documents, processing them, and filing the return. However, the final, yet most crucial step is the e-verification of the returns. Remember, without completing e-verification within 30 days of filing, the ITR is considered invalid.

While you may already be familiar with the e-verification process, this note is intended to guide you on how to check whether your e-verification is completed. Even if your service provider or consultant has informed you that the return is e-verified, it is wise to verify it yourself for assurance.

How to check the status?

  1. Go to income tax portal – https://eportal.incometax.gov.in/
  2. Login to the portal using your PAN and password
  3. Go to Dashboard
  4. Click – View ITR Status on the right, it will show the following
    1. Chose the Assessment Year (current 2024-25)
    2. Return filed on …………… (if your return is filed)
    3. Return verified on…………. (if this shows a green tick, your return is e-verified)

If the return is not verified, kindly do it within 30 days of filing the return or inform your consultant that the return is not yet e-verified.

Additionally, once the e-verification is done, you will get a mail from the income tax department confirming that The Income Tax Return: ITR5 of 2024-25 for BAXXXXXX0A has been successfully e-verified.
