What is Hat? In Hindi, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu Language we call it as ‘Toppi’ / Topi.
A hat is a garment covering the head. It comes in different shapes and styles. It comes in different colors; it is made up of different materials.
I am not sure why so many idioms have been created around hat. Some of the popular one’s are-
At the drop of a hat – refers to immediately or on a slightest signal. For example – Mr. Arun is always ready to go riding the bike at the drop of a hat. So, it refers to instantly or suddenly, without any planning.
Hat in hand – refers to an attitude of respect for someone powerful. Maybe it is based on the custom of men removing their hats to show respect.
Hats off to – refers to admire or congratulate someone who has to done a great job.
Talk through Hat – refers to talking nonsense. When a person is ignorant about the topic but talk as if he knows, we say ‘talk through hat’
Throw hat into the ring – refers to ‘enter the fray’. Take up a challenge by showing one’s willingness to join the competition. For example; Mr. Zee is throwing his hat in the ring by contesting in the by-elections. The ring referred here may be ring in boxing event.
Under one’s hat – refers to keeping something secret or hold the information to one’s self. For example – I am resigning, but keep it under your hat.
Topi Haakodhu (Putting the hat). In Kannada Language it refers to ‘cheating’. For example – Mr. Zoor has taken a lakh of rupees from Doom. He has put a topi to Doom.
