Wishing all my readers a very Happy New Year 2026.
As we step into a new year, I wanted to begin with a simple, feel-good thought, one that requires no resolutions, no targets, and no grand plans! Just a gentle reminder about how the smallest things in life often shape our happiness far more than we realise.
Part I: Simple things ignited
Have you ever noticed how the tiniest things often ignite the biggest fires in our lives? From our homes and offices, to our circles of friends, simple things somehow gain disproportionate importance, sparking disagreements and hurt feelings, while larger acts of love and kindness fade quietly into the background.
Think about it: in families, people often argue about whether the gas flame should be high or low while cooking, whether the coffee is too hot or too cold, or whether the maid has missed a corner while cleaning. In these moments, the love someone pours into preparing a meal, or the years they have dedicated to the home, go unnoticed, overshadowed by a single over-salted dish or an undone chore.
In offices, too, simple things frequently trigger unnecessary friction. A colleague may get upset because someone forgot to reply to an email promptly, or because their contribution wasn’t explicitly mentioned in a team meeting. Friendships may suffer because someone didn’t invite a friend to lunch, or because a birthday message arrived late. In society, we see neighbours arguing over a parked vehicle slightly over the line, or over music being played a bit too loud during a festival!
Part II – Simple things ignored:
On the flip side, there are simple things that often go ignored, yet they are the true sources of joy and meaning in life.
Imagine the peace of watching a sunrise, the calmness of a morning walk where you converse with your own thoughts. The quiet joy of helping a colleague finish a report just before a deadline, or the small thrill of achieving a personal milestone, like finishing a book you started months ago, or organising your workspace after weeks of clutter.
There’s an unmatched happiness in cooking a meal that everyone relishes, hearing a child’s laughter, sharing a heartfelt conversation with a friend after years, or simply planting a small sapling and seeing it grow day by day. These are simple, unassuming moments that nourish the soul deeply.
Part III – Is this a new phenomenon?
Absolutely not.
History and mythology quietly remind us how small moments can trigger large consequences. Kaikeyi’s demand in the Ramayana, Draupadi’s laughter in the Mahabharata, or even something as ordinary as the Salt Tax during India’s freedom movement. Each began as a seemingly minor act, yet went on to reshape destinies and nations.
Small things, when allowed to dominate the mind, have the power to disturb peace, relationships, and even history itself.
Part IV – Flip the Thoughts
Life offers us a choice: to focus on the small negatives and allow them to consume us, or to find joy and meaning in the small positives. Next time, before you highlight that missed phone call or that lukewarm coffee, pause and cherish the quiet gesture of love behind it.
Let’s train our minds to ignore the negative simple things and celebrate the positive simple ones. Life will feel lighter, relationships will feel warmer, and every day will hold a small, hidden celebration just waiting to be discovered.
Once again, wishing you a year filled with simple joys and lighter hearts.
