The previous Commonwealth Games (CWG) was held at New Delhi in 2010. CWG became very popular after this event, not because of the games, but because of wealth, creation of personal wealth! How soon 4 years have flown, the game is back again.
CWG, multi-sport event is held once in four years and 2014 games are being held at Glasgow, Scotland between 23rd July and 3rd August, 2014. This time 4950 athletes from 71 different countries are participating in 261 events in 17 different types of sports.
The games are hosted by one of these countries: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Scotland, England, India, Malaysia, Jamaica and Wales.
The first event was held in 1930 at Canada and till 1950 this event was called as ‘British Empire Games’ and later in 1978 the name ‘Commonwealth games’ was coined. The Commonwealth Games Federation is the organization responsible for the direction and control of the Commonwealth Game.
The major type of sports are aquatics, netball, athletics, rugby, badminton, shooting, boxing, squash, cycling, table tennis, gymnastics, triathlon, hockey, weightlifting, wrestling etc.
What is Commonwealth? The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 53 independent countries. The Commonwealth is often described as a ‘family’ of nations and peoples. It is home to 2.2 billion citizens and over 60% of these are under the age of 30. The Commonwealth includes some of the world’s largest, smallest, richest and poorest countries spanning five regions. Thirty-one of its members are small states, many of them island nations.
CWG is one of the major sporting events of the world. The other major sporting events are Olympic Games, Asian games.
