FIFA World Cup, 2014

The boys who were holding Cricket bat have now moved to Football. On my way to office, I would see atleast two dozen people playing football at Hombegowda School grounds. When I reach home in the evening, lot of boys in my apartment complex (wearing green, red colored shoes) will be playing football on driveways, short of breaking the car mirrors!

If you glance at the newspapers, from the first to the last page you will find some or the other information about Football. The days are not far; when football will be one of the points of discussion at tea time, lunch time in office canteens and at all social gatherings. It is easy to say ‘I don’t follow football’ and keep yourself away from the discussion. At the same time, it is not difficult to know about Football and be a part of every conversation in the days to come!

I have tried to put forth the information about FIFA World cup, 2014

What does FIFA stand for?

FIFA refers to Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the global governing body of this game. [Similar to International Cricket Council (ICC) for cricket]

What is FIFA World Cup?

The FIFA World Cup is an international men’s football competition contested by various national teams. The World cup championship takes place once in every 4 years. The first event was in 1930 and the last event was in 2010. The 2014 FIFA World Cup will be held between 12thJune and 13th July 2014 at Brazil, South America

Who are the current Champions?

Spain.

How many countries will participate in this tournament?

32 countries will participate in this event and India unfortunately is not in the list. (We tried but failed to qualify)

What is the prize money?

USD 35 million [wait, I will convert to Indian rupees – it is 207 Crores] for the Winning team and USD 25 million for the runner up [you can convert to Indian rupees, if the need be!]

The total Cost of the event is USD 12 Billion [Wow! So much! How much is it? It is equal to Rs.72,000 Crores; this amount is more than the total taxes (Rs.66,000 Crores) collected by Karnataka Government for the Financial Year 2013-14

About Football

This information is also important!

  • It’s about kicking a ball with the foot to score a goal
  • The match is played by two teams, each having 11 players and one of them is the goalkeeper.
  • The duration of each match is 90 minutes; divided into 2 sessions of 45 minutes, with 15 minutes break between the sessions.

What is the difference between Sports and Games?

Game is team play; sports is an individual’s performance. For example, Football is a game and Discus throw is sports.

The person participating in sports is called as athlete or a sports person eg: Ms.Ashwini Nachappa. A person who participates in a game is known as player eg: M S Dhoni.

Last Words – how Indians celebrate World Cup?

  • Boys will be playing Football in grounds, parking lots and footpaths
  • Schools will announce weekend coaching classes for Football game
  • Kids, as usual, will be playing ‘Online’ Football instead of other games!
  • Garment companies will be selling T Shirts with pictures of Football or famous Football players such as Messi (Argentina), Ronaldo (Portugal), Neymar (Brazil), Andrea Pirlo (Italy), Mario Gotze (Germany) etc.
  • Bars and Restaurants will display big hoardings “Pay 1500/-, watch FIFA Matches in Big Screen with Unlimited Beer” [with unlimited beer, can they see the Goal Post or the ball?]
  • Hair Style: The football players cut their hair around the head and leave some hair at the center of head or at some parts of the head (it will look like islands of hair on the head). They may be doing this as they sweat a lot while playing. You have not understood what I mean? Don’t worry, you can see yourselves. Please visit any malls or the streets of Koramangala or M G Road, you will see boys having funny haircuts and to confirm that they are copying Football players, watch their foot. They would be wearing neon green, neon red or neon yellow colored shoes!

We the Indians participate in every aspect of the football championship, except playing real game at FIFA World Cup, 2014.
