This summer my daughter did some homework. She took an inventory of all the major movable items like clothes, shoes, books, utensils, etc. According to her document, we have around 2200 items at home!!!
While analyzing the list, we noticed that 30% (appx) of the items have not been used by us for the last 5 years! At least 20% of the items have not been used in the last 2 years. Why should we have such items at home if it is not put to use? So, we disposed of many of them.
As my kids are growing, we were apprehensive that the flat is getting congested and one additional room would be helpful! For this too, she did an exercise and prepared an excel sheet based on space occupied by a different set of items. To our surprise, we realized that at least 20% of the space is occupied by items that are not used by us. At least 15% of the area is empty but we rarely use it. So, we re-organized the items, scrapped certain items and now the house is roomier and airier
After 10 days of this job, our perception of a large house or more space has changed. Suddenly we started feeling small is beautiful in the real sense. For me, the real luxury is having fewer items and more open space at home. (Confession – another fact is that I am a poor accountant, I can’t afford a bigger house! So, I derived the satisfaction of feeling big in my small adobe!)
Based on our experience, I would suggest those who are in a similar situation to do shopping at home this Summer Vacation! Instead of visiting malls and shops to add more junk at home, better to Shop at home. You shop at home, pick up the junk (you do the same thing in the shop and dump at home usually), scrap or donate and earn money or satisfaction.
Happy shopping!
