I am Covid Certified

In the past 14 months, all of us have been bombarded by many institutions and forums through their webinars, seminars, workshops, Certified courses, etc. To this list, I am adding one more today- Covid Certified Patient.

The facts. I was tested Covid Positive and am back to normal now.

9th April was not usual for me. I had a mild body ache. Still, I insisted on my regular 7 kilometers walk at Lalbagh. Around noon, I had a client meeting and attended it. But by 2 pm, I was completely exhausted. The attitude in me said Covid is for others and for me, it should be a normal fever!  So took crocin.

10th, 11th and 12th – Upgraded from Crocin to Dolo 650. From 3 tablets a day to 4 tablets a day! No reprieve from fever; it was vacillating between 99 and 101. While brushing my teeth on the 12th of April, I realized that my sense of smell had disappeared. I tried smelling perfume, eucalyptus oil and other similar strong smells! Nothing worked. So, went for a Covid test and got a +ve result on the 14th of April.

My Doctor friends gave the prescription and I started medication with home isolation. This phase continued till 16th April and by then, my oxygen saturation level dipped to 92-91 from 97-96. I was feeling more uneasy and easily fatigued.

I thought of getting a CT scan and blood tests done. My CT scan showed moderate infection in the lungs and the doctors suggested hospitalization.

Between 16th and 21st April, I was admitted and got treated.

Day Book – When I was in PUC, I was working in Canara Bank as a student trainee. At that time, I used to see a book called ‘Day Book”, which is like 3 feet by 3 feet! A huge book. It was on 16th April, I encountered a similar document, my “case sheet” which the Duty doctor used to carry; a huge sheet!

50 Years Vs 5 days – Due to my lifestyle, I had never taken any medicines so far. Maybe, the cumulative medicines consumed in 50 years is equal to the total intake in 5 days of Covid. I thought, by the time I will be discharged, 25% of the hospital pharmacy will be empty and within me! Am I going to be a walking medical shop after the treatment? So many thoughts and nightmares! Too much medication! But the good news! I recovered. Side effects? No idea. Have to bear it, if any. My bad luck.

Is this how everyone gets treatment? No. Not really. Only the unlucky ones have to battle to earn medicines! 95% of the people go without any symptoms, some get cured only by Dolo or only by fruit therapy or hyperactive people recover through water therapy! 1% get serious and may even die. That remaining bracket of 4% holds the cases like mine!

One can’t prepare to be in 95% and if you ask me, it just happens. Lottery.

What is the message?

  • The fewer people you meet; more the good for you.
  • Higher the protection and precaution you take, lesser the chance of becoming Covid positive.

All alternate therapies may work, you can try. But in cases like mine, once it goes out of control/ borderline, then hospitalization is the only choice. If you don’t want to be in the Covid Celebrity team; then

  • Avoid people, crowds
  • Attend wedding if you are the bride or the bridegroom. A strict no in all other cases.
  • Don’t be adventurous. Covid won’t give you brownie points for your heroism.

But for how long?

Not till death for sure, so no worries. It is only till such time that you can walk to a hospital, find a bed without any influence; find oxygen easily; source medicines at a discounted price that these precautions are needed! This means, till the corona curve flattens, the number of cases come down and discharges are much higher than the admissions. At least, isolate during the peak season say, for 15 / 30 days, to avoid unnecessary tension, if tested positive.

Stay safe.
