As I thought about starting the new year, the topic of last-mile connectivity, used metaphorically seemed the most appropriate for my first article of 2025!
We often put significant effort into tasks but fail to complete the final, crucial step, rendering all prior efforts ineffective. For example, we file Income Tax returns after careful deliberation and multiple exchanges of information. However, all this effort becomes a total waste if we forget to e-verify the return. The return filing process may have taken three days, yet the last step, which hardly takes a minute, determines its validity.
I frequently emphasize this to my students preparing for their CA Final exams. After investing three years of hard work, reading over 8,000 pages of material, and watching countless videos, it would all be futile if they don’t maintain good health and develop the ability to handle exam stress and pressure.
This pattern is visible in property transactions as well. Buyers may spend 99% of their effort focusing on details like the colour, texture, and design of fixtures, yet they often fail to collect signed statements of account or receipts from builders for payments made. When it comes time to sell the property, they scramble to locate these essential documents.
Similarly, when purchasing goods, we listen patiently to sales executives as they explain unnecessary features of a car, TV, or saree. Yet, after making the payment, we often neglect simple things like understanding how to open the fuel lid or connect the appliance to the power supply.
Even during family functions, we may spend one or two full days leisurely enjoying time with everyone. However, when it comes time to leave, we rush out without properly informing the host and then end up calling them later to apologize.
The same oversight occurs during travel or trips. Despite planning for a month, we may forget essentials like tickets or keys, or fail to switch off lights and close taps before leaving the house.
It seems most of us struggle with last-mile connectivity completing that one final, yet critical step. Without it, even the most well-planned efforts can collapse.
On a personal note, I have often struggled to keep up with New Year’s resolutions beyond the first month. This year, however, let’s make last-mile connectivity our resolution. It’s a habit that can simplify our lives, improve efficiency, and ensure success.
Let’s work on this and share our experiences at the end of 2025 on how we improved our last-mile skills.
