Whatever has to go wrong will go wrong on Monday morning. The first thing you mention “one longer week ahead! Same office, same manager, same kitchen, same urgency and the cribbing goes on…”; thus Monday is a bit depressing day to start.
Adding to this feeling, instead of getting up at 6 pm, you will get up at 6.30 am. Hurriedly cocked food will be either salty or spicy. Kids complain about it and you can’t control your tongue. Though you have kept kids cloths ironed and ready, one of the socks would be missing! The housemaid supposed to come at 7.30 am, will come around 7.45. Once you are ready to go; you will find a huge traffic jam on the way to your office, instead of 10 am, you will reach office at 10.45 am. On the way of office, you would have thought of assigning certain work to your team members and for your disappointment, one of the crucial team members sends SMS ‘sorry; I am stuck at native place; won’t be making it to office today’ Normally your Manager comes late to the office, but on this day, i.e., on Monday, he will be there at office much before you reach. Though you would have completed great amount of work in the previous week; he will ask about a work which you have not yet started!
This is the general way the middle class life goes on every Monday. The instances mentioned above are symbolic; you can relate similar situations which have come up your life! This is called ‘suffering from Monday morning blues’; returning to the routine work after a welcome holiday!
So, we understand Monday is the first day of the week; but what is this ‘blues’ in this phrase? I understand that blues refers to a type of music made popular by African Americans. The ‘blue music’ deals with rather sad themes and as a result leaves the listener feeling sad. So, Monday blues means feeling sad or depressed on the starting day of the week!
The management gurus have put together many suggestions to get rid of Monday morning blues; and some of them are –
- Keep yourself organized (so that you won’t struggle on Monday)
- Avoid sleeping late during the weekend (especially on Sunday night)
- Enjoy your work and workplace (so that you won’t get bored of going to office)
- Keep alarm 5 minutes before the regular time (so that you won’t hurry to do things)
- Mentally ready to receive your housemaid 10 minutes delay (after all, she is also like you; may have Monday blues!)
- Look forward to next weekend (hope is the best medicine)
Hello! If you don’t have Monday blues; fantastic! This shows that you are very well organized and you love your work at office. You have the ability to control your emotions and balance your life better than many millions of working people on earth. Please extend special thanks to the God!
