Our School III | what government can do to improve schools?

How much money is the government spending on primary education? This is where I stopped the article yesterday.

Number of teachers in India: There are close to 60 Lakh teachers in elementary education (primary schools) in India. Government of India is spending around Rs.25,000 Crores on primary education and maybe all the states together will be spending another Rs.1,00,000 Crores on primary education every year.

But where is this money going? What is the government trying to achieve from the current model of education? There are schools with children and no teachers; there are teachers but no students. I read in a newspaper that in one school, students of standard 1 to 4 are taught in a single classroom together! There are schools which have no roof and in some extreme cases, there are no buildings as well.

Can the Government really do something about it?

Schools are required for the welfare of citizens. The majority of the people want their kids to study, but in private schools. So, why can’t government lease out schools to NGO or corporate houses or private schools? The teachers can continue as government employees and work in schools. Let the private people manage the schools, bring back education as the main activity of schools (currently government schools are acting as Feeding centres) Let government help private entrepreneurs to manage the schools, provide them satellite linked education, funds for digital library and other facilities.

I am sure all of you agree that the parents and students are looking for education and not free meals or free books. These are required for poor people but they are incidental to education and not the main activity.

Sooner the government acts on this issue, the better for the country. Otherwise, the poor people of this country will be deprived of quality education. I hope the glory of private education (not the fee charged by them) is spread across India on Public Private Partnerships. PPP is the need of the hour in OUR SCHOOL as much as it is in building highways and infrastructure.
