Namaskara
Today, for the first time, I personally and single-handedly prepared Ashtadravya Prasada for our office pooja (for about 100 people). This prasada, made with eight sacred ingredients, carries deep significance and blessings, and I am delighted to share it with you.
What is Ashtadravya?
“Ashta” means eight, and “dravya” means ingredients.
Ashtadravya is a sacred mixture prepared with eight traditional items, offered as prasada to Lord Ganesha during poojas and homas. It symbolises devotion, balance, and completeness.
Ingredients Used
- Avalakki (Flattened rice) – Symbol of simplicity and humility
- Haralu/Aralu (Puffed rice) – Represents lightness and purity
- Ghee – Sign of prosperity and auspiciousness
- Honey – Denotes sweetness and harmony
- Sugarcane – Associated with growth and vitality
- Banana – Represents auspiciousness and continuity
- Ellu (Sesame seeds) – Symbol of strength, protection, and longevity
- Jaggery (Bella) – Brings sweetness and removes the bitterness of life
Why is it made as Prasada?
- It is a wholesome combination of grains, fruits, natural sweeteners, and ghee, nourishing both body and spirit.
- Each ingredient carries symbolic meaning, together invoking blessings of health, prosperity, wisdom, and harmony.
- By partaking of the prasada, we believe the divine energy and blessings are shared equally among all devotees.
Significance in Pooja
- Lord Ganesha, being Vighnaharta (remover of obstacles), is offered Ashtadravya for invoking his blessings before starting any auspicious work.
- The number eight is also considered auspicious, representing the eight directions and completeness of life.
- Preparing and distributing Ashtadravya fosters unity, gratitude, and positivity in the place where it is offered.
The prasada, lovingly prepared, is not just food, it is a symbol of togetherness and divine grace.
Wishing you all a very Happy Dasara, Ayudha Pooja, and a pleasant holiday!
