Have you heard of Jāgrata Panchakam? If not, you are not too late. It was written nearly 1200 years ago by Ādi Śaṅkarācārya, the great saint and philosopher who revived Advaita Vedānta. Like his other practical works such as Bhaja Govindam, this set of verses is a reminder to stay awake and aware (jāgrata) in life.
Though the name says “Panchakam” (five), seven verses are often recited. Each one is a gentle but firm wake-up call, urging us to live wisely, free from illusions of wealth, relations, and desires. Here are their timeless messages in brief:
- mātā nāsti pitā nāsti… tasmāt jāgrata, jāgrata
Parents, family, wealth, and even our home, none are permanent. Everything is transient. Accepting this truth makes us less shaken by loss.
- janma duḥkhaṁ, jarā duḥkhaṁ… tasmāt jāgrata, jāgrata
Birth, ageing, and worldly duties bring sorrow. Life is bound by karma; past, present, and future actions. Until desires end, the cycle of rebirth continues. Stay aware.
- kāmaḥ krodhaśca lobhaśca… tasmāt jāgrata, jāgrata
Passion, anger, and greed are like thieves that steal wisdom, our greatest treasure. Left unchecked, they destroy peace and character. Be vigilant.
- āśayā baddhyate jantuḥ… tasmāt jāgrata, jāgrata
Man, though intelligent, often wastes life chasing pleasures. Time lost never returns. Use every moment wisely.
- sampadaḥ svapna-saṅgāśāḥ… tasmāt jāgrata, jāgrata
Wealth, possessions, and youth are as fleeting as dreams, flowers, or lightning. Realising this impermanence helps us live without regret.
- kṣaṇam vittam kṣaṇam cittam… tasmāt jāgrata, jāgrata
Wealth, thoughts, and life itself change in a moment. Yama, the Lord of Death, waits for none. Hence, remain alert.
- yāvat kālaṁ bhavet karma… tatra kā paridevanā
We live only as long as our karma lasts. When it ends, so does life. Lamenting is of no use, the only way forward is liberation.
These simple yet profound verses remind us that life is short, uncertain, and ever-changing. By staying awake to this truth, we can live with wisdom, detachment, and peace.
I hope you found this reflection useful. These verses are beautifully sung by Prahalad Dixit, you will find the link below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oINkYkwgfA&ab_channel=TattvaShankara
