Masterpiece is referred to any work that is of high quality.
But the term originally referred to a piece of work produced by an apprentice aspiring to become a master craftsman in old European Guild System. (Guild system is an association of artisans or merchants who control the practice of their craft in a particular town). To be a member of the guild, one had to successfully create a craft, called Masterpiece!
The term masterpiece was first found in 1605.
This word is now used as a brand name by certain companies such as Rolex Masterpiece Mother of Pearl Diamond, Transformers masterpiece toys, Max Factor Masterpiece Mascara cosmetics.
