Kantara musings

Kantara is a trending topic. After this movie got released, I attended 4 social gatherings. In all, the highlight was Kantara.

“Did you watch Kantara?” is a common question; without this, the conversation won’t end, however, short the talk maybe. Some people were boasting, “Yes, I went on the second day (he wants to show that he is super-fast, earlier than others!).

“I watched thrice”, they feel it is a matter of pride to have watched it so many times.

Another person was saying that he watched the movie in a theatre in his town where the quality of the audio was not good; so, he is going to a multiplex in Bangalore!

It has almost become like an insult if you have not watched it to date!

Why is this movie such a running hit?

It is a low-budget (or moderate-budget) movie. The title card itself says it is a tale. Are fairy tales the trend now? Mr Rishab called the story Dhantha Kathe. People out here are considering ‘the making of the movie’ a Dhantha Kathe.  A lot of side stories are available on YouTube and social media

Simple storyline – maybe people found the simple storyline relaxing; needn’t think too much.

Increased faith in God – Generally the fear of God or nature has increased in the post-Covid era. There are elements of God and supernatural powers that are shown with a thrilling experience in this movie. Maybe this has attracted the crowd.

Connect to the roots – The storyline takes you back to your village environment. Forgot to mention, many people are talking about Gods, traditional celebrations, and other such things at public events. Many are going to conduct or participate in such events in their villages going forward, thanks to Kantara.

The pace – The movie goes from one shot to another shot, quick and fast. Maybe this pace coupled with God, colorful attire, folk dance, traditional music, village environment with only lamp lights, etc., was a complete package. Not many movies are shot this way in the past; so, there was a natural attraction for something new and exciting.

Overall, a Kannada movie made a big name and caught the attention of celebrities, critics, and mass crowds in equal measure across the country.  We can surely consider this as a Kannada Rajyotsava reward or gift for all Kannadigas. Thank you Mr Rishabh Shetty for making all of us proud.

Happy Kannada Rajyotsava month!
